If you haven’t heard, Forza Horizon 4 Eliminator is a free update that brings battle royale to the Forza Horizon universe. If you are like me, you may be curious as to how, exactly, a battle royale with cars would work. Lucky for you, I have all of the details below.

How’s It Work

If you are like me, you probably thought a battle royale mode for Forza Horizon was a joke. In this day-and-age, we are used to everything getting a battle royale mode, but doing so with cars doesn’t seem very straightforward.

Massive Player Count

To start, the Eliminator mode will utilize the entire Forza Horizon 4 map. In addition to the massive map, the mode will support up to 72 players at a time. A big map and an enormous player pool is a great start.

Race to Car Drops

Every game starts with players on equal footing. At the beginning of a game, each player is set to drive the same Mini Cooper. There are only two ways to upgrade your car. The first is to drive around the map until you see a “drop”. A hovering drone and pink smoke denote the drop point. Each car has a level between one and eight with eight being the best car you can get. The second way to upgrade your vehicle is via a mechanic we will discuss shortly.

Shrinking Map

Like most of the battle royale games you may have played, Forza Horizon 4 Eliminator uses an ever-shrinking dome to reduce map size over time. Spending too much time outside of the area will see you eliminated. What’s a little different in the Eliminator mode is that your “health” doesn’t reset when you find your way back into the playing area. No reset means you have one bar of “health” to manage for the entire game.

Race to Eliminate

The Eliminator mode has a “battle” mechanic, as you would expect from a battle royale. When in proximity to another player, you can challenge them to a race. The challenge will trigger a point on the map. The winner gets to take the loser’s car or absorb the loser’s car level into their own as an upgrade. The loser gets eliminated.

Final Sprint

When the player-base dwindles to the final ten, the last point is generated. From here, it is an all-out race for first.

When Does it Release?

Forza Horizon 4 Eliminator releases December 12th, 2019. The Eliminator mode comes to Forza Horizon 4 as a free update. That’s excellent news, as long-time fans of the game get some new and exciting content to play. This concept of “games as a service” is beneficial for gamers when it works.

Closing Opinion

I had pretty negative opinions when I first heard about the Eliminator mode. Everything is getting a battle royale mode now, and it is not always done well. I have to say the Eliminator mode looks really fun.

Between the scramble to find a new vehicle, the thrill of head-to-head races, the ever-shrinking map, and the final sprint to finish, Forza Horizon 4 Eliminator should provide tense and hectic fun.
